| Player: | DL Vettori |
DateLine: 19th February 2007
From being New Zealands premier spin bowler Daniel Vettori has through hard work, dedication, determination and concentration worked his way up and is now rated as a genuine all rounder thanks to his pugnacious and occasional cheeky batting. But his chief claim to fame will always be as a spin bowler who demonstrates guile and turn, flight and deceptiveness in abundant measure. New Zealands youngest Test cricketer he was only 18 years and ten days when he played against England at Wellington in February 1997 Vettoris natural gifts and an earnest endeavor to work hard at improving his game has made him a competitive player and one to respect. He has his ups and downs thanks mainly to injuries but he has come back strongly every time. A keen student of the game it was no surprise when Vettori was named as Stephen Flemings replacement captain when the skipper was recovering from surgery for the tour of Australia in 2005-06. Whether batting or bowling Vettori has been in the thick of action for a decade now but his youthful zest for the game is still prevalent and this is perhaps the chief cause behind his excellent record 2000 runs with two hundreds and 200 wickets in Tests and 1000 runs and well over 100 wickets in ODIs.
