Like so many youngsters, Prosper Utseya too got his chance to play for Zimbabwe when the rebel cricketers withdrew. This was against Sri Lanka in 2004. Since then he has been a regular member of the ODI squad and has impressed with his utility qualities being regarded as a one-day specialist. But it is his bowling that catches the eye more than his batting. An off spinner of some variety who is not afraid of giving the ball air Utseya has the ability to turn the ball and his economy if not the strike rate is admirable. In his lone Test against Sri Lanka at Harare in 2004 he top scored with 45 in his debut innings. He bowled very well on the tour of the West Indies in 2006 and was thrust into the captaincy for the series against Bangladesh that followed keeping the job for the ICC Champions Trophy in India later that year. A prodigy of sorts Utseya made his first class debut just before his 16th birthday scoring a half-century in a tight situation in just his second match.
