Edmund David - a short profile

Edmund David holds a unique place in Glamorgan`s history, having led the county in their first-ever match against Warwickshire at Cardiff Arms Park in June 1889. He also struck the first blow in the game by winning the toss an electing to bat. However, like his colelagues, the right handed batsman struggled against the talented Warwickshire attack, and David`s contribution was just 0 and 2, as the Welsh county were comfortably defeated.

Despite this modest start, the St.fagan`s batsman secured a regular place in the county`s middle-order as they played a series of friendlies in their quest for recognition as a Minor County. David`s finest game was against Monmouthshire at Newport in 1896 when he produced career best performances with both bat and ball, making 85 and returning figures of 4/48 with his nagging off-cutters. Although past his best, David also figured in Glamorgan`s side in 1897 when they were admitted to the Minor County Championship, and he played his final Glamorgan game in 1898.

He was the son of William David, the influential Rector of St.Fagan`s, and after leaving Cheltenham College, David had become a leading player with the South Wales Cricket Club. He also served on the Glamorgan committee until 1907, and acted as Land Agent for the Margam Estate, on whose property he helped to oversee the creation of the Margam cricket pitch.
