Scorecard: | Bangladesh v New Zealand |
Event: | New Zealand in Bangladesh 2008/09 |
DateLine: 21st October 2008
Kiwis will have to thank their captain Daniel Vettori for winning the first test against Bangladesh by three wickets. It was a one man effort that led to New Zealand scraping home.Vettori literally played a captains knock of 76 to see kiwis through. He thoroughly deserved the man of the match. It is difficult to remember the last time one single individual had such a massive influence on a match. He batted and bowled well in both innings and with so much pressure as captain to not lose a test match against Bangladesh it was a commendable effort.
Starting the day at 145 for 2 ,chasing down 317,New Zealand were under pressure right through the chase. They lost Redmond early. It was a mini collapse when Taylor and Mccullum went. But Flynn and Vettori were involved in a match winning partnership that saw New Zealand through to a comfortable position before both departed.Mills and Oram scored the winning runs.
For Bangladesh it was a case of so near yet so far once again. It happened once before against Pakistan, that time it was Inzamam and now it is Daniel Vettori who was standing between them and victory. It would be a bitter pill to swallow as it was just a matter of breaking one partnership.Chances like these will be few and far between and they once they get it they need to latch on to it.
