Biography:MP for Launceston 1885, for Isle of Wight 1885-1900; Attorney General 1885-86, 1886-92 and 1895-1900; Master of the Rolls 1900, Lord Chief Justice of England 1900-13. Created baronet 1900; created first Baron Alverstone and appointed Privy Counsellor 1900; created first Viscount Alverstone 1913. President of MCC 1903-04.
Other Sports:Well-known athlete, setting UK best time for two miles of 10min 7.3sec at Cambridge in 1865.
