Notes
--> Earl of Darnley made his debut for England in First-Class matches
--> R Purchase equalled his best innings bowling analysis in First-Class matches in the England second innings
The newspapers all call this England v Hampshire. Hampshire is stated to have had Aylward and Ring as given men, although it should be noted that the team also includes Butcher and Clifford. Possibly they stood in for unavailable Hampshire players. This was the first 'great' match at Lord Winchilsea's house at Burley-on-the-Hill, near Oakham. In the ACS booklet Country House Cricket Grounds of Leicestershire, EE Snow remarks: 'Undoubtedly the most historic and important cricket venue in Leicestershire and Rutland, Burley-on-the-Hill (this is the correct name of the house as the village is just called Burley) has been largely ignored and has often been confused with Burghley House, Stamford.'
SB gives the match as Winchilsea v Smith: it also spells the venue incorrectly as Burghley.
