In this season the Sydney Gregory Cup contest was not played until March with New South Wales being the host state. For only the second time since the competition began in 1950 the match was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the previous match at that venue being in 1976. However it should be noted that from 1951 to 1984 fourteen games were played at the No 2 ground. New South Wales gained a quite substantial victory, winning after just twenty-three minutes of play on the fourth day with all ten second wickets standing.
Play commenced at eleven o'clock on each of the first and second day of the match as well as on the final day; and at 11.25 a.m. on the third day. Stumps were drawn at 6.34 p.m.; 6.15 p.m.; 6.50 p.m. and the match concluded at 11.23 a.m. on the fourth scheduled day.
For the first time in the competition all twelve players of each team took part in the match with eleven to bat, and eleven fielding at any one time.
