The North Melbourne captain declared his team's second innings half an hour before stumps on the final day, so as not to lose another wicket, which would have adversely affected his team's batting average. Under the existing pennant rules, no extra points were awarded for an outright, as opposed to a first innings win, so Melbourne which had already won on the first innings gained no advantage from North Melbourne's action.
