This match was drawn after Hertfordshire followed on 239 runs behind. Buckinghamshire's innings of 459 having lasted six hours and under the rules of cricket in operation at the time, declarations could not be made on the first day. At the beginning of the visitors' innings, Gresson retired with an injured thumb, and he returned to bat after the fall of the second wicket. For Buckinghamshire, there were 15 fours, 6 threes and 10 twos in de Paravicini's 120, scored in 105 minutes. Higgins-Bernard's 53 contained 3 fours. In the Buckinghamshire innings, Higgins-Bernard and de Paravicini put on 172 runs for the seventh wicket, which was a new record for the competition, exceeding the 109 added in the Berkshire first innings by A C M Croome and F W Finch v Hertfordshire at Reading in 1895. J H Weatherby and Cobb put on 58 runs for the ninth wicket. In the Hertfordshire first innings, C Pigg and Coleman put on 70 runs for the last wicket. When it became clear a draw was inevitable, the match ended early to ensure the visitors caught their train. The Buckinghamshire innings of 459 was the second highest of the season and a new record for the Championship until surpassed later in the season by Berkshire against Hertfordshire at St Albans in August. The match aggregate of 814 runs was the second highest of the season.
