Northamptonshire won by eight wickets on the second day. For the winners, Thompson took 11 wickets in the match for 85 runs. He also top-scored for the visitors with 44. In the visitors' first innings, Driffield and Smith added 63 runs for the seventh wicket. For the losers, Dashwood's 68 included 1 five and 5 fours.
In the home team's second innings, Harford and Coleman put on 51 runs for the eighth wicket. The Rev F W Poland became ill on the morning of the match and withdrew from the Hertfordshire team. H M Harford was telegraphed to replace him, but could not attend until the second day. The Rev W P Kingston was due to play for Northamptonshire, but also withdrew on the morning of the match and was replaced by L T Driffield. An alternative version of the score for the winners' second innings, found only in the Hertfordshire scorebook and nowhere else, has Thompson scoring 7 not 13, extras 10 not 4, and Wilders conceding 18 runs not 24.
