This return match was drawn, as had been the encounter between the two sides at Northampton at the beginning of the month.
For the visitors, Thompson's 125 took ten minutes short of five hours and contained 18 fours, 2 threes and 7 twos. One newspaper report suggests he gave seven
chances. By contrast, Brown's innings of 55 was made in 75 minutes with 8 fours.
Together, they put on 100 for the sixth wicket in the Northamptonshire first innings. On the first day when on 69 in the Northamptonshire first innings, Thompson scored his one thousand runs in championship matches. He joined H E White of Hertfordshire in being the second player to achieve the feat of scoring a thousand runs and taking a hundred wickets in the Championship, the former having done so on 2 August. For Berkshire, there were 13 fours in Chapman's 86, scored in 90 minutes, and 9 fours in L G A Collins's 75 which took 140 minutes. In the Berkshire innings, Chapman and Barrett put on 125 runs for the ninth wicket, which was the second largest partnership for that wicket during the season. It is believed that Chapman kept wicket when Dauglish bowled his lobs in the Northamptonshire second innings.
