This opening match in the Championship was drawn with Surrey 2nd XI winning on first innings. It was the first time that Surrey had played a 'home' match away from The Oval. Rain prevented play after 12.20 pm on the second day. For the home team, there were 13 fours in Garrett's 78 and 11 fours in Davis's 64.
In the Yorkshire innings Gooder took 7 wickets for 67 runs. In the Surrey first innings Garrett and Rushby put on 98 runs for the eighth wicket in under an hour. For the visitors, there were 2 sixes, 17 fours, 3 threes and 6 twos in Rothery's 114, scored in 2 hours. In the Yorkshire innings Rothery and Hutchinson added 135 runs for the third wicket in 75 minutes.
