Staffordshire won this return match by an innings and 159 runs on the second day, after enforcing the follow-on. The match between the two teams at Jesmond in June had also been won by Staffordshire. For the winners, there were 9 fours in Stratton's 73, Hollowood scored 72, Fereday 66 and there were 6 fours in Briggs's 63. In the Northumberland first innings Skinner scored 58. In the Northumberland second innings resuming at 70-5, Barnes took the last 5 wickets for 7 runs. On the first morning Veitch injured his right arm and was unable to bowl after lunch.
