This return match was won by Staffordshire by 10 wickets at 4.30 pm on the first day, with just 3½ hours play needed to complete the match. For Staffordshire, Barnes and Mee bowled unchanged throughout both Durham innings, Barnes taking 12 wickets for 30 runs and Mee 8 for 31. In the Durham first innings, Barnes in his second over took four wickets with his first four balls. His victims were Turnbull, Stoner, Scott Owen and Coulson. Hollowood top-scored in the match with 19. For Durham, Morris took 7 wickets for 22 runs in the Staffordshire first innings. The match aggregate of 136 runs was the lowest in the Championship during the season for a completed match. Similarly, the Durham second innings total of 20 was the lowest of the season. Newspaper reports describe the drying pitch as being 'treacherous' and 'difficult'.
