Durham won this return match by 111 runs at 5.55 pm on the second day, after Northumberland had required 189 runs to win in 2 hours. The match between the two sides at Jesmond in June had been drawn. For the winners, there were 8 fours and 9 fours respectively in Adamson's two innings of 55 and 59. Proud's 64 contained 10 fours, and Turnbull's 52 5 fours . In the Durham first innings, Bewick and Morris added 73 runs for the eighth wicket. For the losers, Gilman's 113, an innings of 2½ hours, included 1 six, 13 fours, 6 threes and 7 twos. There were 4 fours in Nesbit's 54. In the Northumberland first innings, Gilman and Elsey put on 73 runs for the ninth wicket. In the Durham second innings Best retired hurt. Five thousand spectators were reported to be present on the first day.
