Durham won this return match by an innings and 112 runs after 37 minutes on the second day. The match between the two sides at Jesmond in June was drawn with Northumberland winning on first innings. For Durham Harrison scored 145 in 2 hours 5 minutes, it included 8 sixes and 15 fours. Brooks scored 52, his sixth successive score between 50 and 99 for Durham. Morris took 11 wickets in the match for 84 runs including 8 for 28 in the first innings. Common kept wicket for a period during the match. Northumberland commenced batting just before 4 pm on the first day. Norbury was their top scorer with 45. Milne bowled unchanged for 32 overs. There was a collection of £11-6s-0d for Thackeray in the afternoon on the first day. The Chester-le-Street professional's benefit match had been washed out on the previous Saturday.
